Disney Inspired Cabaret – Queen of Hearts

This weekend was such a BLAST! There is so much to tell so I’ll break it up into several posts.

First and foremost I want to thank Nicci B and Smoove for providing an amazing space and working so hard to bring Disney to life! We had video projections provided by Blockhouse Studio, and cast of amazing and wonderfully talented performers!

My first number of the night was the Queen of Hearts. The costume was designed by Johna Sewell and then patterned and stitched by both of us. The wig is a Luthien in Mahogany from Arda Wigs with a tiny Thibra crown attached on top.

I’ve never worn anything so sexy and revealing. I have to say that it was a pleasure to sweat uncontrollably while covered in pleather! LOL! We were sewing for 60+ hours on all the costumes that I wore in this show and I have to say I was 100% pleased with everything that came to the stage.

Please enjoy these videos captured by Sara, Sara, and Liza!

The second number is from the Nightmare Before Christmas, stay tuned!!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! AKA: GAY CHRISTMAS

This Halloween season has been so full and busy which I have found to be very exciting!

Kicked off the weekend with a performance at Joe’s Halloween party with fellow entertainers Bendovah Plenti and Anastasia Beaverhausen. Bendovah and I opened the show with our Hocus Pocus number, after which we all did one solo performance, followed by a sing-along to Time Warp!

Opening act, we were down one sister (she went to dust early)

I had so much fun debuting my 1940’s style Silent Hill Nurse with the mask by Brian ‘Daguru’ Beech. Working on this dress was SUPER FUN. Using Butterick Pattern 6018 in a size 16 I made minimal adjustments which made the dress pretty form fitting. I used cotton muslin to create the dress and splattered it with Rit Dye in Crimson and Chocolate (Brown). I love that my neighbors just accept the fact that sometimes I splatter fake blood on costumes in my front lawn.

Saturday Night

On Saturday I transformed into the Hostess for Cardinal Stage Company’s presentation of the Rocky Horror Picture show at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre. There were two showings of the movie, one at 8PM and one at Midnight, and both were sold-out with 5-600 people in the theatre.

This was the first time that I had hosted such a large event and to say, “I was nervous” was a slight understatement! Once I walked out on stage I shook all the fears away and just had fun, which was made even more enjoyable with the amazing audiences I had!

We had a “Devirginization” costume contest where we played all sorts of fun games on stage. Games like, eat popcorn off a strangers body, sexy words (like scrotum), “Whose Your Daddy?”, and peel the banana with only your mouth!

Banana game excerpt!

All the contests were amazing and I had fun with each and every one of them!

I am so very grateful for all the opportunities that I received this week and I am looking forward to a VERY busy month! I’ll keep you all update! Happy Halloween!

Confetti Dot Nightmare

In my sewing journey I thought I’d seen the worst that fabric stores have to offer.

I was wrong.

In a moment of weakness I agreed to help a friend with some costumes for their up-coming play. In reality I was supposed to just be answering a question, but you know how that goes, and it turned into me sewing several costumes for the production. All the costumes were to be made of this “Confetti Dot Sequin” fabric from Jo-Ann Fabrics.

First problem I noticed my machine skipping stitches while I was trying to sew.

Second problem the sewing thread would break after only a few stitches, which I found out was due to…

The third problem which was the sticky residue left behind by the fabric on my sewing needle.

To understand why this is all happening you have to understand this fabric that you are working with. Those “pretty” sequin dots are literally glued to the lame polyester warp and weft yards. Because of this as you sew your needled builds up friction which creates heat and melts the glue ever so slightly as it begins to coat your needle. Once the needle is coated your thread can’t pass through which causes it to build tension and snap.

As you can see above, here is a needle coated with sticky residue from the fabric.

SOLUTION:

Well my first piece of advice is to simply pick a different fabric…no? You really want to sew with this? OK, fine.

(After intense internet research and my own trial and error here is how I was able to sew with the Confetti Dot Sequin Fabric)

  1. Get some oil: WD-40, Sewing Machine Oil, Baby Oil, etc… I used sewing machine oil. Take a Q-tip and soak it in the oil, then rub the Q-tip on the sewing machine needle until it’s coated in oil. Now thread your machine like normal being careful not to touch the needle with your fingers.
  2. Use Stabilizer. To save a bit of time, and money, I used parchment paper. You place this paper underneath your fabric and sew through it, after you’ve sewn your seam you tear it away leaving just your fabric and the finished stitch.
  3. Sew on the SLOWEST speed, this reduces the friction and heat build up which in turn reduces the amount of gunk build up on your sewing needle.
  4. After you have finished a seam soak another Q-tip in oil and run the sewing needle until you’ve rubbed off any build up. *repeat steps 2-4*

Using these steps you should be able to slowly sew together your pattern pieces and create a garment.

Good Luck and God speed!

Disney Drag Show – Part 1 (The Back Door)

A couple weeks ago I took a break from my four month contract in New York to fly home and participate in the Disney Inspired Drag Show at my home bar in Bloomington, IN, The Back Door.

It was so much fun! I had been working on costumes prior to hopping on the plane but when I landed I had to jump right into learning choreography for the opening number: Hocus Pocus!

I always love creating art with my friends and I can’t wait to be home in 3 more days so we can push forward and get more projects done!

Condom Fashion Show 2016

I had such an amazing time yesterday performing, and participating as a judge, at the Condom Fashion Show which was part of Condom Fashion Week (https://www.facebook.com/CondomFashionWeek/?fref=ts). Its a great and fun way to educate the public on safe sex practices and condom use.

Thanks to Bendovah Plenti my face was painted and I was dressed and my number was caught on film! She really does do it all! (https://www.facebook.com/BendovahPlenti?fref=ts) #whenyouneeditmost

My condom wig was made with an #Ardawigs (www.arda-wigs.com) LeTigre as the base. Condoms were then cut and melted with a heat gun to 5 yards of rope. Finally gaps were filled in with unrolled condoms to get that curly hair look!

Let me know what you think! Can’t wait to see #Bloomington again soon!

#FreshFriday @ The Backdoor!
